If not what kind of sanitation did they have?

They dug pits they called sinks. They may have had tents over the pits, but no "outhouses" except in semi-permanent camps. Men were ordered to use the sinks while in camp. There were also other regulations to keep men healthy, but they didn't work over the long run. The longer the men used a camp, the greater the chance of disease.

They dug what was called a latrine-a ditch well away from the water supply and main eating/sleeping area of the camp.

they did what they do today when in the field. they **** in an outhouse and under the pot there is a big metal pan. when it is full they burn it to clean it. see the movie "jarhead" if you want a good visual
