The tradition goes back to the late 19th century, and parts of the early 20th century. The idea is that white is a summer color, and after labor day the summer is considered to be over. So it is therefore unfashionable to wear white after Labor day. Most people don't stick to that anymore though. But if you look, you'll notice stores sell very few items in white after labor day, and this is one of the reasons.

It was a fashion faux pas to wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. It isn't any more so feel free to wear white anytime. You probably will get some comments from people from the old school of thinking, but things have changed so shrug them off.

It is a major fashion error. You can wear white just not pants or shoes. Labor Day is the end of summer which is the only time you should wear white pants, dress, purse, and shoes unless they are tennis shoes. Off white is fine but after Labor Day you should pack up the summer things and look to fall items

It's an old wives' tale/belief, whatever - you CAN and you SHOULD wear white after the Labour Day.
