I would have to say, at least personally, yes. Small talk is far more awkward than any silence, uncomfortable or otherwise, but I'm sure that others will disagree. It's definitely something that varies from person to person.

It is for the person trying to fill in the uncomfortable silence. Ive asked the stupidest questions when trying to fill the silence.

maybe unwanted small talk can be strange,
but when you do so, things will still be in motion.
in contrary to silence when you do not know what to expect.
Even more, when you start small talk, you will get the opportunity
to make an excuse and say peace and goodbye.

On the other hand, when its too quiet you can also just leave.

It is only uncomfortable for the person who is either trying to continue a conversation, or the person who doesn't really want to respond. Wouldn't it just be easier to end the conversation and part ways? Isn't that the less embarrassing option

Lol I don't do small talk whatever that is. Uncomfortable silences... they don't last long with me.

Yes, because you start up small talk it seems like your pushing conversation. It will just die slowly, and get more awkward with each attempt. Just leave("Umm, sorry g2g") Or talk about something that would be a possible topic for interesting conversation.

Good Luck! :-$

Any type of interaction between two humans or even one individual the comfort zone is the one which one is most comfortable with. If you feel good when you pass someone and just nod or say hi or just go about your way not even aware of the presence of others can be different for all people.

I used to worry about this alot. But I came to the conclusion, if I haven't got anything to say, I won't just talk for the sake of it.
What has helped me, is to be a good listener, most people find talking about themselves easy, so if you ask a few general questions (not personal) about the person you are talking to, they tend to open up, and the conversation gets easier.

I feel that it is... cuz its so obvious that the person doesnt want there to be awkward silence, so they know it and you know it, but no one knows how to stop it
