I have a work shed about 500 feet from my home. I'm trying to extend the wireless coverage from my home to the work shed without purchasing another account from our cable internet provider. I'm running a Linksys wireless router from the house and only about 10% of the time will my computer find a wireless connection in the work shed. How might I extend the range? The wireless router is at the closest point in the house to the work shed, so I can't move it any further or it'd be outside.

Find the option that says Xmit Power in the router configuration. Keep in mind, this is very dangerous, because it makes the router run hot, and could overheat and destory your router. You should never turn it above 70. If that doesn't work, you could buy a signal amplifier for your router.

I've just done the same thing for my girlfriend's dad who has a shed in the garden.

The most elegant way is to purchase another cheap wireless router/ access point and use this to extend the range of your wireless network by acting as a repeater.

This means your Linksys will connect to the second router wirelessly ( which only needs power from a mains socket) which can then in turn connect to the shed. There are a couple of ways of configuring the routers, I have found WDS to be reliable and you can keep your network encrypted to the outside world.

I only see a few ways:
You could run a network wire easily that distance.
You could replace the setup with an extended range unit, like the newer N spec.
You could put a high gain antennas, see{
