I was told that if a player does not get drafted he could walk on. Kinda of what they do in college football. any truth to this?

This is totally true. But it's not called walking on.

Undrafted players still wishing to try to get into the NFL go into a thing called Free Agency. Free Agency is also a pool where the players that teams do not resign and release go to.

The NFL teams look through Free Agency for a player of high enough caliber to play in the NFL on their team, then they sign him. A lot alike walking on, but not quite the same.

Hope this helps.

Players are signed as free agents all the time. However, they are scouted in college by pro teams, who have an idea of how good they are. There isn't an open tryout system, like baseball often has.

Free agents often make it in pro football. Jason Peters, the Bills' top offensive lineman, was a big tight end at Arkansas. He wasn't drafted, but signed right after the draft. He played a little tight end, was moved to right tackle, and then headed to left tackle in the middle of last season. He's going to be an excellent player.

: quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Jeff Garcia; receivers Rod Smith, Wayne Chrebet, Oronde Gadsmen, Terrence Wilkins, and David Patten; running backs Priest Holmes, James Allen. Dominic Rhodes, Mack Strong, and Stacey Mack, Mike Bell; offensive linemen James "Big Cat" Williams, Derrick Deese, Jeff Saturday, Matt Lepsis, and Mark Dixon; defenders Eric Hicks, London Fletcher, Hollis Thomas, Sammy Knight, Willie Whitehead, and Pat Williams; kickers Adam Vinatieri and Olindo Mare; and punter Tom Rouen.

They can be signed as an undrafted free agent, no money is guaranteed in the contract and they may not make the team. Some guys like that have had pretty good careers, though. Trent Green was an undrafted free agent and the last 4 years hes been the 3rd or 4th best QB in the league.

Many, but not all, NFL teams have open tryouts, true. Also many teams sign several players after the draft as undrafted free agents. The odds of making the final roster in either case if slim but it does happen from time to time.
