My friend was on MSN Messenger and was invited to open up this photobook from a person on his contacts list. Then after he closed it, he scanned his computer and found a virus and when he right clicked to delete it, he found something unfamiliar and it was called "Search_Globe" and it has 25kb. So now his computer is doing things unfamilarly and there are popups and also, his toolbar is missing.

How and what are some of the options to get rid of this virus?

Go to the link below and there is a complete list of free on line scanners that will scan your pc from their computers.

Recommend Bitdefender or Kerpersky as they are both good scanners. (No conflict with your installed antivirus program).

You are looking at about 3 hours of scan time. When the virus is found, Bitdefender will clean the virus for you.

Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/ Windows Components.
Uninstall present version of MSN.
( Make a list of all your contacts earlier to this )
Run av & antispy programs.
Download MSN again from MIcrosoft site only and install. Problem should go.

their are many possible ways for you to remove this things. and i will discuss them one by one.

1st is try installing a anti-virus engine like mcaffe, trend micro or AVG. i personally recommend AVG for it is much better and much safe than any other anti-virus i know out there.

2nd is it a trojan or virus? try installing a secondary line of defense "spyware and malware removal kits" ex. are spybot search and destroy, lavasoft, yahoo anti virus and microsoft defender choose any from these and scan your pc thoroughly. i recommend using all the examples i've gave for sometimes their are some files that the other program doesn't detect and the like.

3rd if the steps i've gave fail then you have no choice but to backup your system and reformat it. hope that helps

You have spyware installed on your system. If you follow all the following steps it should get rid of your problem and prevent future problems. All programs listed are free.

---------------------------------------------------------
Update your antivirus and run a full scan

If you do not have spyware protection install:
AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free Edition
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
or
Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition

---------------------------------------------------------
Install Windows Defender (full time spyware protection)
Perform a full scan.

---------------------------------------------------------
Install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all five. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection.
Install and run now.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)

Set to run when computer starts.
Place cookies you want to keep in save list

Note if a scan detects a problem but is unable to remove, start the computer in safe mode with the internet line disconnected and run a full scan.

In severe cases your system restore files will also be infected. In these cases you will need to turn off system restore to prevent malware hiding in the system restore files and reinfecting the computer during removal or during a future system restore. Turning off system restore deletes the system restore files.

Right click on "my computer"> Properties > System Restore Tab > Check box turn of system restore

After the malware is removed turn on system restore.
