I'm 21, and getting braces... I'm nervous and excited at the same time. What cant you eat? Do braces make you look like you have an overbite when your mouth is closed???

be careful when eating sandwiches...especial any made with white bread..they get stuck in your teeth. Apples or other hard fruit are better eaten when you cut them up into little wedges. Gum is also rather difficult as it gets stuck in the braces. I never really cared about the whole over bite thing. You will want to lick your front of your teeth a lot which can be an odd feeling. And you will need to get lots of chapstick. I constantly had chapped lips for some reason.

Also be very careful with hard to chew things. I stayed away from things that required me to tear them with my teeth. Like chewy bread, ribs or anything to be eaten off the bone.

You should also watch anything that you eat or drink that may discolor your teeth. YOu will have little squares glued on your teeth. Things like wine, coffee, grape juice, etc. can cause the rest of your teeth to discolor.

I actually really did not mind my braces. I got them when I was 12 and had them for just over a year. If you follow what the orthodontist tells you, the better your experience will be. i.e. if they tell you to wear rubber bands in a certain way, you do that. I actually was able to have them removed about 2 months early.

The little wax stuff they give you is a godsend. Especially when you go and they tighten the braces, which really is just getting smaller wires put on. Those can be very sharp and the wax can be used to cover them.

And for future planning, the way to keep your teeth in the same position is actually what you do after the braces come off. The plastic retainer things are very critical. If you wear them for as long as you can in the manner that the doctor tells you that's the best way to keep your new mouth. My brother and I both had braces. He followed none of the rules while wearing the braces or the retainers. My mouth is pretty much the same today as when y braces were removed in 1988. My brother not so much. They are back to the way they were before.

Good luck with the new smile!

Well I had braces for over two years. They hurt for the first two days you get them-well everyone is different. Your first issue will be cleaning food out of your braces at the dinner table. But you'll get used to it and be able to do it with your tongue in seconds. They only hurt when you go to the ortho and get them tightened up. Which will hurt for the first couple of hours. Certain candy will get stuck and sticky to your braces, there hard to get out so I would avoid naything like that. Lettuce wraps around the braces too. It would be hard to close your mouth at first because your not used to your teeth being that big. After two months you'll be a pro and it won't be a big deal anymore. I hated having braces especially in middle and high school. But now that there off I look completely different and my cofidence has shot up!!! Good luck!!!

I just got mine off a few months ago. They aren't as bad as they seem. i didn't really limit my eating just be careful when chewing something hard or sticky. If you chew your nails its best to get rid of that habit now. The nail clippings get stuck in your braces and are very difficult to get out. Pain wise it is pain free when they go on. The next day they will be sore so make sure to stock up on soup!

at first, because your teeth are crooked, they look like a train wreck, but not for long (2months maybe)
