I recently switched my son who's almost 9 months old to soy formula because all of a sudden he got horrible diarrhea from what I believe was a developed milk allergy since it went away when I switched to Prosobee. My mom told me that infants are often milk intolerant but they grow out of it quickly and that I should just put him on regular milk at 1 year. I know it's still a few months away so I'm just trying to figure it out. Since formula's easier to digest than real milk, should I try switching him back to milk-based formula and then switch to whole milk? do I go straight from soy formula to milk? or do I go from soy formula to soy milk to milk? Did anyone's baby have a milk allergy that went away when they got older and what did you do to switch? thank you!

Both of my son's had difficult with milk when they started drinking it at one year. They were breastfed, so we didn't have the formula issue. But what worked for my second son was switching him to rice milk for awhile (I've read some disturbing things about too much soy, plus it's also a common food allergy) and then switching him back and he's done fine. My first son simply outgrew it around 2 years, which is when my second went back to regular milk, so my baby girl is going to wait to get milk until at least 18 months, and if she has any trouble I'm going to wait until she's two.

If I were you, I would switch to soy or rice milk at one year and then maybe try a little milk at a time and watch for symptoms--keep in mind that it can take awhile for them to develop so go slow. Also, a little known symptom of milk allergy is red cheeks or eczema on the face.

I'd stick with the soy. For kids who develop or are prone to allergies, doctors tend to recommend not reintroducing foods until the child is four or five to give them time to build up a resistance. Milk is a difficult one--my nephew had what we thought was a slight allergy to milk as an infant, switched him to soy and he was fine. Then switched him back to milk and was allergic to the point where we now have to carry an epi pen for him. His doctor reminded us that milk really isn't the best for humans to drink anyway. 70 percent of all adults and children are intolerant of milk--it's not meant for humans. Soy is healthier in general. I'd stick with it either way. So long as the little guy tolerates it, I'd keep giving it to him.

When my son was under 1 we had him on soy formula for a bit. My doctor told us that they don't really like to label infants as lactose intolerant before the age of one and that many children who can't handle milk based formula go on to regular milk with no problems. Since you'll most likely have another doctor's appointment before he stops formula you'll want to ask your doctor for exactly what to do for your son. But my guess is that he'll have you at least try regular milk instead of going to soy milk.

Two of my kids had milk allergies. My son's was so bad he was passing blood in his stools at 2 weeks ( so scary!) - he couldn't even tolerate soy - he had to go on Nutramigen formula. Anyways, at age one we went straight to whole milk - and it turned out he had outgrown his milk allergy and tolerated all dairy fine. My daughter was also on soy formula - she also went to whole milk at age one and was able to tolerate it fine.

My doctor had told me that if age one they could not tolerate dairy, to wait 6 months and try again. If still can't tolerate, I was to wait until age 3 to try again (I guess thats the next big age that they can outgrow allergies by). My niece was on soy formula - couldn't tolerate dairy at age one or 18 months (she would get horrific diarrhea still) - she just turned three - my sister tried again - she does ok with yogurt, but whole milk for some reason still bothers her. She now uses Lactaid milk for her. Hope this helps!
