"The Desmonds" was shown on Channel 4 in the early 1990s, but I remember another comedy featuring a black family from earlier than that called "The Fosters" - Lenny Henry was the son in it I believe. Not sure if it was on Channel 4 though.

It sounds like Desmond's, which was based in Peckham, London. However, it's cast was predominantly from the west indies, and it wasn't really an 80's sitcom, as it was made between 1989 and 1994.

I think the most likely answer is The Cosby Show, I think it was on NBC which is channel 4 in Southern California. I believe Jefferson's was on CBS and Good Times was ABC. Sanford and Son was more a father - son show not a hole family show.
