No one overlooks the players of the past. But we are living the history right now, probably when Joe played people asked the same thing about Honus Wagner. We live in a time where we can pull up a player in real time, watch them on TV almost 7 days a week. Live action is delivered almost on demand. Past players don't have that and never did, so it stands to reason that current players are thrust in your face everyday and with the past era you can't see them, touch them or hear them. You can only read the stats and imagine how they played.
While we may focus our attention on the players in the present no one overlooks the players of the past. And 60 years from now I'm sure someone will ask if Pujols would have been a good player in their time.

You have to remember that DiMaggio hasn't played since 1951. There aren't many people out there who remember him playing.

No one diminishes the accomplishments of such players as DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, etc. But it's natural to think about today's players, and exciting to see if they can measure up. Albert Pujols has a chance to be one of the best ever, and it's great to see him try.
