It is to get you to interact more. If all you are doing is firing off questions, there is no real interaction. You need to answer questions to get enough points to be able to ask. You will notice that there are way more answers than questions. If you got points for both, there would be lots of questions without answers. That serves little purpose.

Good question, by the way.

Regards.

Points are created all the time. Every new person gets 100 points. It takes away points so that you should want to answer questions not just ask them.

Since it cost you lot of points it makes you put effort into your question. So you don't see lot of people asking bunch of really dumb questions.

Point system is designed so people will be encouraged to put in more thought into what they post and improve quality of Yahoo Answer experience.

But you do get points (3 points I think) if you hand pick best answer on your question. So net loss is less than 5 actually.

Not quite. You will get back 3 points for choosing the best answer to your ownquestion.

good question. you see...the points system has to balance itself out. when you get "a best answer" you get...10 points. where do these points come from? from the people like yourself who do ask questions -- they give 5 points. so it does take two people to balance a "best answer". hope it helps. simple mathematics.

simple Republican ideology.

answer a question with a stupid answer 2 points (right, bush?)

ask an intelligent question, minus 5 points. (right, bush?)
