It was supposed to be D2 vs A1 and both West Indies and Australia had topped the group?

The reason was because even before the tournament started the positions were already determined. This was done by each team's ranking. The top two teams of each group were ranked 1 and 2. For example, Pakistan (from Group D) was ranked D1 and West Indies was D2. However because Ireland beat Pakistan, it now assumed the D1 position. West Indies D2 position still remained.

The way it was designed it was as if Ireland and Bangladesh (or any other team)were not suppose to make the 'Super 8'. It is kinda weird!

Hope this helps!

What I understand that Grouping in the World Cup was made as per 2005 Rankings. Accordingly Australia was ranked as A1, Sri Lanka as B1, New Zeland as C1 and Pakistan as D1. West Indies were ranked as D2. Though West Indies emerged as top team in Group D after exit of Pakistan, there was no change in the Group ranking. They remained as D2 only as originally placed.

Hence the match was placed between Australia (A1) and West Indies (D2).

Yeah thats what the schedule said. I am not completely sure about it either. It was supposed to be Ireland vs. Australia. It might be an error in the schedule or something.
