So, I was at the beach today around 2:30 and came across a dull old rusty hook peeking out of a long clump of seaweed. I lifted it up with my foot and it was securely tied to a long wooden pole that looks as though it was painted white at some point. The rope used to hold the hook to the pole is thin and there is more of it rapped around the opposite end(where someone would hold it). I think that its some sort of fishing equipment from back in the day. Do I have anything special here?...or just junk? Thank you for your help!!!

It's a gaff, very common on all fishing boats. Once a fish is either caught in a net or on a fishing line, as it is brought closer to the boat, the sailors use a gaff to hook the fish and pull it into the boat. They are generally fairly common, but if it is a really nice one you might be able to get a few bucks for it.

Sounds like a boat hook. These are used to pull smaller boats to larger boats. Today they are probably most common on sailboats who tow a dingy. Once the dingy is pulled close to the boat the hook is used to hold it securely along side and then push off. In earlier days when fishing boats carried a lot of row boats called dories they were used to bring the dories alongside so that they could be lifted onto the deck.

It's a homemade gaff or boat hook very common but the hook could hurt someone if it was face up .You can just throw it away.
