Know what? They don't do that anymore! That was a test for glaucoma, but they don't use that procedure; there is something new and you do not feel a thing. I was squeamish about that test too. After my last eye exam I asked when they were going to do the air thing and he said that's an old, outdated technique!
So, you don't have to be worried.
Good luck!

I am so right with you on this. I hate that test. I think the worst part is not knowing when the puff is going to happen. Ask the tech if you can hit the puff button (actually I think it's a floor peddle) or if she can count 1-2-3 before the puff. Make sure you know if it's 1-2-3 and then puff, or 1-2-puff, Tell the tech if the test goes badly and has to be done over, they get a puff in the eye from your foot.
Good luck on that test, study hard.

I hate getting the air burst because it startles the crap out of me. Ask the eye doctor if he/she can numb your eyes beforehand. There is also another instrument that can be used in place of the air burst - its a soft rubbery thing that looks like a marking pen.

I don't really have any hints on how to calm your nerves, but the last time I went to the eye doctor I was so freaked out about it, the lady just gave up. I think that if you have had it before, and are fairly young that they might just let you skip one. I think she was just sick of seeing me flinch though. Good Luck!

most ophthalmologists don't use that to measure ocular pressure anymore
eye drops are dropped into each eye- when sufficiently numbed
the technician touches the eye with a wand(pen) that measures the pressure
the test doesn't hurt at all
its to test for glaucoma
make sure you take sunglasses with you- for after the tests, your pupils are dilated and sensitive to sunlight
