You know, that is true. Some restaurants are solid and do things like that, there's a Lebanese one down from where I work that makes sure to do so. But most will just toss things out, and it makes me sick. They say "weeeeell, it's regulations" or "we'll lose money that way." What the hell? I doubt any Italian restaurant in Connecticut would ever lose money unless it served rats. They can spare something, I believe. A few where I live do, and those are good people.
And to the gal above me, the idea of leaving well alone because it doesn't concern you doesn't exist in my culture. We have a concept that doesn't exist in American mainstream culture called gadugi, or dividing what we have to help those who don't have anything. To an old-school Cherokee, not helping is like hating the person. How people can ignore others and feel good about it is so foreign to me.

and what pray tel are all the people going to eat, rotten food, do you really think people want left overs from some dude that couldn't finish his hamburger. Even hungry people dont want that junk. You cant expect for people to lick their plate. Besides, America donates tons of money to feed the needy, Are we responsible for the welfare of the world, I dont think so. atleast we shouldn't be held accountable. One thing I do know is that some grocery stores give away the food that is about to go bad to shelters. Things like milk that will spoil in a couple of days, bread fruit, preserves. I think thats more worth looking into than saving table scraps.

By the time the food is on my plate it is too late to worry about how much i eat or throw away...the better question is why do we allow farmers to throw away good food and not give the surplus to the poor just to keep the price of food high. Why do we let corporations use good farmland to grow tobacco or other useless crops when there are poor people all around....because the rich minority(less than 1 percent of total pop in the world) want to stay rich, and want others to stay poor.

Well it's unhygienic for a start, and many foods spoil quite quickly. Think about how much it would cost to ship leftovers, it's very expensive. It's just not practical. People waste food because we take it for granted. We always know we can get more. I myself am guilty of this, but it's just our lifestyle. Us wasting food looks bad when you compare it to them starving, but if we do what we can to help them then our food wastage isn't so bad, like I'll donate to charities, whether I finish what's on my plate or not won't do anything for the kids in Africa.

It is not important to be concerned what other people do, because they are the way they are it is not your concern. Think about what you do and allow them their space in this time. If you notice something that can be changed work on that.
My great-great (there might be one more great in there) Grandparents, started the first LA Mission in Los Angeles, CA, Mr. & Ms. Billings. And I have learned so much from the day I was born, we can not and need not to change people it is us that needs to change and learn it is none of our business what others do unless it is a criminal act, or they need assistance. I tell myself when the girl next door cusses me out, I feel so crumy, its okay, its okay, ...

Because the food will spoil. Sadly, they can't do that. You think about making an invention to help, or solve that problem.

Its for health reasons/liability reasons. What if I was crazy and decided to sprinkle some coke on that cookie, knowing it was going to be donated to some poor little kid? Now he's a crack addict.

Food rots, sweetie. If the customers don't eat it, it doesn't get shipped somewhere else. Grow up and put down the fairy tale book. If a restaurant gives away food and someone gets sick, it is lawsuit time.
