When somthing is bound to you it becomes "soul bound" ANYTHING green or better has the status of "Binds on Equip"; which means it soulbinds when you equip it. Some higher end stuff (such as most blues or better) "Bind on Pick-up" instead. They become soulbound as soon as they show up in your inventory.
A soulbound piece of equipment can not be traded to (or given to) another player. Nor can they be sold in the auction house or mailed to anyone. You CAN still sell it to NPC vendors, or disenchant it if you have the enchantment profession. You can also take the equipment off whenever you want to and still put it back on later. You can also put soulbound objects in the bank.
Items that are sold in the auction house will generally get you more gold then selling to a vendor (sometime a LOT more) so if you aren't going to use an item that soulbinds, don't put it on. If you are going to use it, just put it on and don't worr y about the message.
Some quest give tools to help you complete them (like shoveles, or a potion to revive fallen NPCs) these items are sometimes soulbound too, but the game won't warn you about that when it gives it to you. You always have to return the object when the quest is done, so don't throw them away before you complete or quit the quest! Also the wands that enchanters make as the tool for their craft is automatically soubound when you make it, hence all enchanters have thier own tools.

If you equip your armor and it's binded, you can't sell it. You have to sell it to a vendor when you're ready to get rid of it, you won't be able to give it directly to anyone else.

When you equip that item, that means, basically, its stuck to you for a while. You can't trade it to another person and you can't put it on the auction house. You can, however, sell it to a vendor or disenchant it (if you have enchanting as one of your professions).
