Do talented workplace bullies help more than hurt?

Think Steve Job, Bill Gates, and other "robber barons / captains of industry"...or even "nutty professors" who, under tenure, put unprecedented strictness in requirements.
In the same way women date jerks who "spice it up" enough to make it worth it, such people can result in both hot groups and unprecedented performance, yet also degraded morale and even lawsuits. Are they worth it?
