Allot of the votes here are going towards Hendrix. As amazing as he was, his work was the effect of effects. Waa Waa and other pedals accompanied him on stage and in the recording studio just as much as a spare pick did. Ever hear him play on stage and compare it to the recorded versions? He's a good but very average player live. The Hendrix music we all know and love is the result of studio work. Given time, he could have been the best but died far to early. As a guitarist, his playing is very easy to match. Very average with creative use of effects. That's all really. Don't get me wrong, he was a very tallented player. But not the best.

I'll say Page. Not only could he play a mean guitar, he changed guitar playing. How many people could tune the way he could? Play open chords and closed chords and major and minor chords at the same time like he could? Who else played with a violin bow like he did? And that's just on stage. Jimmy Page innovated the recording studio. Many ways of creating music we now know as standard, boring techniques, Jimmy Page created. He spent hours to days editing minutes of tracks. He truly is a musical genius. I'd even compare him to the classical immortals like Beethoven and Bach.

Can you tell I'm a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan? I first picked up a guitar after hearing Page and my playing is very similar to his. I've spent over 20 years studying his technique.

Give me time though. I may be older than he was in Zep's days but I'm pretty good and getting better.

P.S. After reading your profile, you're my kind of girl. I would email this part to you but you don't allow email. You have good taste in music.

Out of those EVH, Page is the best writer, Hendrix the best blues player and Slash the best punk player.

If you want real guitar playing check out Shawn Lane, Alan Holdsworth or Albert Lee.

Slash is my favorite.
