Several people here have had some pretty good answers. The last article I read on dreams and the "dream state" during sleep stated that there was evidence to indicate that dream states were the brain consolidating information and storing it in long term memory. Usually this means converting our thoughts of the day into longer-lasting memories. Part of the process of remembering is associating one thought with other thoughts and past memories and another is weaving these thoughts and integrating them into some meaningful pattern. Unfortunately of fotunately, during the dream state of sleep our executive function which edits and manages our thoughts is suspended and thoughts are allowed to associate with each other freely, often allowing for strange and novel combinations. I have been fairly successful interpreting peoples' dreams by talking to them about the kind of day they had and asking them about their history and interests. Usually a pattern develops. Sometimes our hopes and our fears are the "motivating" factors that instigate our dreams, which have led some people to think that dreams are a window into our hidden desires. I prefer to think that we are very secretive even with ourselves and try to hide from ourselves thoughts we feel are forbidden or "bad". Then again, those may just be value judgments anyway! Think long and hard about you dream and the meaning may come to you. Try free association while awake!

According to most of the psychological greats - Freud, Adler, Jung, Kelly for example, YOU are the person most likely to accurately interpret your dreams. One good way is to talk it out to a friend - as you talk see what feelings or ideas come to mind. Pay attention to symbols and the feelings - say everything that comes to mind. If you really think about how they relate to your life, you might make the link to their meaning. Chances are you are re-living an event of the day or processing something important but veiled by your subconscious.
I'd love to know what amazing dream inspired this inquiry! Good luck!

No website can tell you what your dream means, only you can.
The best tip off is how you felt about things in the dream, and what the symbols mean to you.
Remember, though (as far as symbols), there's much randomness to dreams -- your brain is processing stuff, and firing randomly.
So start with the feelings, and ask yourself what the dream means to you.
Then ask yourself that again.
And again.
Each time you ask yourself, you'll get closer to the truth.
The idea that a given thing means the same thing to every person is absurd.

Why do you suspect that dreams have meaning?
When the mind is at rest it simply allows for randomness - there isn't necessarily any rhyme no reason to it. What's wrong with accepting that?
If you are looking for meaning in your life... look at the reality of what you like doing, what you do all the time and who you truly are.
