I guess there are a number of different reasons:

- Target audience: With the placement of an ad in a magazine, you know who will be reading it. Sports magazines, fashion magazines, whatever...the genre is set and usually the demographics are too.

- Circulation: You are sending the message to where you audience is, and not paying for delivery to people that could care less about your product. If it was a pamphlet or flier in the letter box, it would hit the bin - the magazine will at least be read.

- Value: Generally, magazines hang around. Not many people flick through one, and pitch it. Re-reading articles or showing them to other members of the family/friends, gives the magazine a shelf life that far outweighs other media.

The advantage of magazines over other print advertising is they have a longer shelf life and are often viewed multiple times and passed around to family and friends.

Each person that reads the magazine can view your ad.
