My class and i just visited the NY Aquarium by Coney Island today and while we watched the sea lion show i thought to myself: are the animals really safe and healthy here or in the wild?
i mean sure they get enough food, but what if too much? They get protection but then again new baby animals wouldn't be able to experience the real world. Their parents might forget how the wild was and only rely on humans. Do you think its fair for the animals to do all those stunts? Please share your thoughts :D

I think all the goldfish would be better off in the wild, unless of course there are also Oscars around.

animals like seals are very rarely caught in the wild and then put into a zoo (or aquarium in this case). If they were released into the wild they would die. It is all they know. The people who work at these establishments have a lot of training (particularly in relation to seals) and so they are not over fed.

You are right, they do rely on the humans. But that is how their life has been. Change that and they die.

It would be completely cruel to take an animal out of the wild and keep it in captivity, that is for sure. But the same goes the other way around. As for the stunts, they are part of the animals enrichment, it stops them from being bored. And it helps form bonds with their keepers.

I think you've asked a good question and I've wondered about this myself.

Most animals live much longer in captivity, but some must be under some stress as they can not be bred in captivity.

In the wild, there are many species where most members do not make it to maturity.

Safety and longevity may not be the only factors. In captivity the animals often don't have a purpose and they look bored whereas in the wild they are constantly doing their job which is protecting themselves and finding food. Even though many animals tend to lose the battle for life, I sometimes wonder if they aren't happier waging that battle.

I think the answer may vary depending on each animal's unique situation.

While animals in the wild run the risk of being eaten or starving that is their natural habitat. Most animals in zoos etc. are either there because someone, who bought them, could no longer care for them, another country donated them for breeding purposes, or even to save them from extinction. Sure some were caught in the wild but that is not done too much now.
The parents of young don't forget the wild but the offspring have to be taught it to survive if returned to the wild.
I don't care for the stunts at all-leave that to dogs.
They get the proper amt. & type of food they need in most zoos along with supplements, so not to worry there.
Seeing these animals is good in several ways including, but not limited to, giving humans a chance to get to know them better in real life, so to speak, then seeing them in books, tv, etc.

Animal that live in cages are not use to the real world. They are accustom to being fed at a certain time and they are also more protected from predators, but there are pros and cons for animals both living in captivity and living in the wild.

a mix of all 3. A properly run zoo assure typical and correct vet care, species restoration/breding application and secure practices from poachers. There are few rhino left in the wild and all are expected to be extinct through chinese language and vietnamese ba$tards needs for their horns. comparable with elephants and their tusks.

you know its sad but its also to teach you and get you interested in saving these animals that are not being fed out there in the big bad ocean.they learn alot from those in captivity and treat them kindly.the fact that you have that spark of empathy and interest is the payoff.you go to school and learn how to prove and change things...good luck
