One of the oddest things I have ever seen happen during a hockey game was when I was working as campus police during a CIS hockey game. This is not like US campus police with actual firearms and all, just "please don't sneak booze in here" Canadian part-time job CPs. Maybe we got one of those big flashlights if we were lucky.

In any case the play came in front of the home bench and both player's sticks came up over the boards as the puck slid along the boards. The players ducked in time, but the kid who was opening and closing the gate got nailed in the head. He was caught right at the end of the bench, leaning over the boards. The players, coaches and trainer were so intent on the action on the ice they didn't notice they had a stick boy down. I had to beat on the glass right behind the trainer and then pointed at the poor kid before the trainer jumped in and had the doc come over too. It all turned out OK for the kid, but it was a strange moment to have a man down on the bench being totally ignored.

Yes.

So have coaches.

The last season that Pat Quinn coached the Leafs he got hit right between the eyes with a puck at least three different games. He was sportin' black eyes all season long! He looked like he had been in a fight!

Yeah, about once a week. I've seen some coaches get cut up pretty good too.
