It started out that way for simplicity and due to the available technology at the time. And now it would not be taken seriously if it resembled Monopoly currency. It's part of our culture and slang -- greenbacks, c-notes, dead presidents, etc.
I, frankly, am quite thrilled with American money and want a lot more!
