All the players you mention are, or were excellent defenders. It's hard to compare Russell to modern day players. There's no doubt he'd still be a crack defender today, but the league is very different now in that there are far more talented offensive big men now. He dominated games on defense. I doubt he'd be able to do that as consistently today. Still, he deserves serious consideration in any talk of the greatest defenders of all time.
Today, Ron Artest is still the toughest overall defender in the league, Wallace the best interior defender, and Zo the best shot-blocker (per minutes played).
But, if I absolutely had to pick just one guy to call the greatest of all time, I'd give it to Pippen. He could guard anyone and always knew what the offense was going to do before they did it.

I'm with roni...
Overall it's Rodman. He was consistently matched up on the oppositions toughest player 2 thru 5. Yes, he did guard centers too. Dude was a beast with strength and no fear. How classic were the match ups with Him and Mailman?
Second I'd give Pippen because of the same versatility. he could guard 1-4. Remember the Bulls Switching him onto Magic in the 91 finals? He Changed that series.
Rodman gets the nod by a hair because he guarded Centers which is pretty hard to do at any level.

I would pick Gary Payton with Scottie Pippen second. Sure some of the other guys blocked shots but Payton and Pippen could guard someone so well they couldn't even get a shot off.

All those players are great (although I think Artest is overrated). I would have to go with Rodman. Rodman may have had some screws loose but he was one of the best hustle players of all time. He literaly put his body on the line on every defensive play.
