It is simply called a flashback and is a very common technique of authors. It is used to tell background to a story that would not other wise be included, but that is important to build the characters personality or motivations. It is used often in a 'frame story', a story within a story such as Ethan Frome (by Wharton) or The Oval Portrait (by Poe)
