You probably get stuck doing the work because your boss knows he or she can count on you. They know that if they ask you, the job will get done. If they ask your co-worker it will not get done or done wrong. This is unfortunate because the person who works hard really is only rewarded with more work. But try to think of it as flattering that they know they can rely on you, and be happy that you likely have far greater job security.
I realize this helps little with the situation itself, but know that you are a reliable employee and your boss is likely very thankful for that fact.

dont know why, but yes it sure does happen in the work place,,,,,, more effort means more work, while others get by slacking off, and normally they might even get better treatment,,,,,,,, i personally , while doing a capable job, have stopped going the extra mile, unless there is extra money , and enough extra to make me feel its worth it,,,,,, though you really have to start this attitude at the start of your job, if you try to change part way threw, they will accuse you of having an "attitude problem" and slacking off ,,,

Eventually you can take all your experience and your good references and find a better job.
Your co-worker will be doing the same thing she is doing now for the rest of her life.
Work hard and have faith.

Who in management is she sleeping with? That might sound far-fetched but it can be the truth - it was at one place I worked at. Same circumstances.
