In any fantasy book what is needed is a realization by the author that what people want to read about are situations that are similar to what they themselves are living through. What makes Harry Potter so attractive is that we have all been or are now in school, we have all dealt with bullies and tough situations, and we have all had friends, with their own weird personality traits and we have all faced, and hopefully over come evil.

So, when I pick up a book of fantasy, I want characters who are essentially going through what I am going through, or have gone through. I want to see clear and descriptive characters who are not perfect but are good; as well as characters who are evil, but not entirely so. The balance of reality and fantasy is the key. If it is too far afield then it will hold little attraction for most people. And then the good vs. evil idea has to be strong. There has to be a clear conflict and believe it or not, almost everyone, although not 100%, of people want to see good triumph over evil.

Finally, there has to be a clear resolution of the conflict between these seemingly real-life characters. The attraction of Harry Potter is that it is readable and also that it has real people in it. The fantasy figures, the ghosts and death eaters etc. play only a small part. The real characters are as real and life-like as you and I are. That's the fun and that;s the key.

Wow. I asked the same question!
But anyways, your the author so you tell me. Your asking people to give you a main idea for a book YOU are writing. So if your book is a bestseller or wins an award, the person who gave you the idea is really the one that is winning the award.

Do you think J.K. Rowling went on sites like this and asked people what to include in Harry Potter? No. She thought about it all by herself. That's what you need to do. Good luck.
