it seems simple enough but i can't figure it.
my car gets 20 mpg and an avg. price of 2.49$ gallon
and i need to figure how much it would be for 550 miles.

Two approaches:

550 miles divided by 20 mpg = 27.5 gallons of gas. Multiply by the price per gallon...

Alternatively, combine your ratios: $2.49 per gal / 20 mpg = $0.1245 per mile. Multiply by 550.

Welll, if it's 20 miles per gallon, and each gallon is $2.49, you can assume that your car gets 20 miles on $2.49 in gas. Now, you can solve like this...

(550 miles/1) x ($2.49/20) = $68.48
