SF fandom is difficult to lump in one definition. A diversified group of science fiction aficionados do their own thing. Some like conventions, others comics, still others movies or TV shows, and then there are the great novels and short stories.... etc etc etc

Star Trek is mostly responsible for bring SF fandom to the masses, but certainly fandom existed before Trek.

There is a SF World Convention held every year, as well as numerous smaller conventions around the country. They are oriented toward many different fan interests. Some are mostly Trek, Star Wars, Buffy, Battlestar Galactia, some are animae, others comics, costuming, the themes are as varied as the people who attend them.

If you're interested in SF, you should attend a convention if you can. It's really "out of this world".

SF fandom is the community of people actively interested in science fiction and fantasy literature, and in contact with one another based upon that interest. I got that straight from Wikipedia...
