I think it's very close but I'm rolling with Big Ben. They both around the same size, both have crappy offense, and they both have great defense. Big Ben is playing in a tougher era so I got to pick him.

1 Title
4 Defensive Player of the Year awards
4 All-Star Games
5X NBA All Defensive 1st Team
5X All NBA Team
2 Rebound titles
1 Block title
Still active!

At first I thought this was a stupid question. Then I read your details, and it's legitimate. Consider this, Bill Russell revolutionized the Game. Has Ben Wallace done that? Ben could go on to blow all Bill Russell's titles out of the water but remember this when Bill went up against Wilt Chamberlain all those years, who came out on top? Anything Big Ben does, will only copy what Bill Russell has already done. That being said, I'd have to go with Bill Russell.

RUssell is the greater player by a pretty long shot. Here's why:

First of all... ask anyone who saw the old Celts (for me its my dad) and they will tell you that Russell WAS pretty limited offensively. The Celts rerely ran plays for him. Almost all of his points came on off reb.
BUT Ben Wallace has NO offense. None.
ADVANTAGE Russell.

Rebounding is no contest. Russell regularly averaged 20+. But EVEN throwing out the averages... Russell consistently LED THE LEAGUE where Big Ben is trailing KG and Tyson Chandler this year. (Tyson CHandler!)
ADVANTAGE Russell.

Total blocks you can't give to either because the L didn't start counting them until the 70's.
EVEN SO, most people will tell you that Russell was THE BEST shot blocker ever given his vertical and ability to control the block and start the break.

I do think this is the tougher era given the amount of pure athletes in the L.

But gotta go with Bill Russell on this one, my man.

nice q though.

Are you kidding me! Bill Russell is questionably the best player ever to play the game of basketball, while Ben Wallace isnt even one of the best centers in the NBA.Its not close at all, even if Wallace is playing in a tougher era hes never even averaged 10 ppg in a season ever. Im guessing you forgot to look at Bill Russells resume before you asked this question. Do your homework kid before you ask dumb questions like this again.
