Irregular periods can make it a challenge to figure out how to maximize your chances for conception. In order to get pregnant you need to have sex around the time of ovulation. Ovulation occurs for most people between ten and sixteen days before menstruation.

The first thing to do, is to figure out whether you're really having irregular periods or not. Don't worry about the date your period starts on. Count the first day of bleeding as day one of your cycle. Continue counting each day until the next time you see red blood that is heavier than spotting. That's the number of days in your menstrual cycle. If that number is consistent (or pretty consistent) then your cycles are regular.

After that, you need to learn to monitor your fertility signs. You can learn more about fertility signs from the website fertilityfriend.com or the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. You can use ovulation predictor kits, which you find in most stores near the pregnancy tests to help figure out when ovulation is happening. Read the instructions for the test, but most of the time, they'll tell you when your LH surge is. The surge happens about 24-48 hours before ovulation, giving you an idea about when to have sex to maximize your chances of conception. You can also use other changes in your body to tell you about when you're going to ovulate. You can monitor your basal body temperature (temp taken first thing in the morning, at the same time each day, as soon as you wake up, with a special thermometer that reads two decimal places, before you sit up or get out of bed, or do anything else) along with your cervical position and texture (it will become soft, move higher in your vagina, and open up a little around ovulation) and your cervical mucous (it becomes clear and stretchy, like egg whites) around ovulation.

You may want to discuss all of this with your doctor before you try and get pregnant, at a pre-conception check up. He or she can give you more guidance about what to do, and make sure that you're in your best health possible to start trying to have a baby.

You can only know when you will be fertile by starting to track your cycle now. Basically, the main thing to look for is cervical mucus, which should start out pretty scarce and then get thicker and increase in quantity as you ovulate. You should start to see this mucus secreted soon after your period. Even the smallest quantity means you are entering your fertile time.

Fertile mucus is opaque and running or clear and stretchy like egg-white. You will also probably feel "wet" throughout the day when you are ovulating. These are all your "green light" signs.

Conversely, after you ovulate, the mucus will become scarcer and then you will experience "dry days." Checking your basal body temperature each morning also tells you that you are past ovulation because your temp will rise in an upward pattern.

A woman's fertility is so much more complex than just "14 days after your period or 14 days before the next." If you'd like more info about tracking your fertility and also need more tips on maximizing your chances of becoming pregnant, check into the Couple to Couple League. They are great and sell lots of good books, supplies, etc. WWW.CCLI.ORG

The book on all this is called The Art of Natural Family Planning (bet you could find it real cheap on Ebay!). My husband and I have used the method with 100% effectiveness for three years now. It can help you conceive, or space the next child if you have good reasons for doing so.

If thats the case I would have sex every second to 3rd day. That way you cover all your bases. I would go speak to a doctor though to see how this could effect your chances of falling pregnant. Good luck
