It maybe that they are trying to see if the door is unlocked so that they can come in without you having to go to the trouble of running to the door to let them in. If it is someone you don't know, call the police and keep all of your doors locked at all times.

I never do that. I always think they are probably having naked time because if I don't answer my door right away, that's exactly what I am doing. I don't want to see someone doing the dishes in the buff.

They are trying to see if you are home, so that they can rob you when they don't hear a stir.
Leave your lights on, keep a radio on, do something, but this is a dangerous situation.
