I hate fabric softener sheets...too full of toxic chemicals. So I can appreciate your search for alternatives.
Yes, putting regular fabric softener on a rag and tossing it in the dryer works very well. It's my alternative for when the kids forget to put the capful in the little dispenser during the wash and the outcome is just fine.
Both baking soda and vinegar work well, just not necessarily together...though they won't create the volcano people are predicting because you're adding them to a washer full of water that dilutes their chemical reaction to little more than bubbling peroxide. Here's what my chiropractor suggests (he's Dr. Holistic....)
Add a quarter cup of baking soda to WASH cycle to soften fabric
Add a cup of white vinegar to RINSE to soften fabric and eliminate cling
The benefit to the vinegar is that it also keeps your clothes from fading because it permanently sets the dyes.
You can use both or just one.
BTW if you go to Linens N Things you'll find these cool new balls that go in the dryer with your clothes and neutralize all of the static and soften your clothes without using any chemicals at all. They're supposed to last for years...talk about a money saver!

I don't know how baking soda & white vinegar, could possibly soften your clothes. I use fabric softening sheets sometimes & the rest of the time, I use a liquid softener. If you have liquid fabric softener, then there's no need to put any on a rag to dry & use later in the dryer. I'd be afraid of spotting on my clothes.

Putting Vinegar and baking soda will cause the two of them to foam up. I don't know how they would do as a softener, You have nothing to lose, by trying it. They are both safe for the wash. I have taken a Face cloth and soaked it in softener and wrung it out and then threw that in the dryer, It worked fine. So I now keep that one and a few cut up towels that were old, near the dryer and use them instead of the sheets

I will mix fabric softener, about a capful with a cup of water. Put a washcloth in it until it's soaked. Wring it out and use as a dryer sheet. You can do this up to about 5-7 loads. Just add water to the cloth and wring dry before every use. I do this if I run out of dryer sheets. You can also cut your dryer sheets to match the amount of clothes you are drying. My mom will use a dryer sheet 3 times and it still works well.

DO NOT mix vinegar with baking soda! *rolling eyes*Have u never heard of those kids' science expeirments using those two together to make those volcanoes erupt?? lol. Use the vinegar in the wash...won't hurt your clothes any. As for fabric softner...use generic dryer sheets...cheap but work the same.

I don't know about the vinegar and baking soda idea, but I have heard that using a store bought fabric softener will keep your towels from soaking up water as good as not using it.

that's his duty to do his very own dang laundry, and if he's in simple terms staying each week then he shouldn't want his sheets washed. Neither you or your mom ought to experience obligated to do those issues. He ought to instead be with politeness asking your mom if that's ok that he makes use of the washer/dryer, and to then use it quickly and get his issues out of ways so as that he would not interrupt different significant different and toddlers chores. Is your cousin no longer conscious that he's staying at somebody's abode and not a hotel? once you reside at somebody's abode, you need to attempt to be a competent abode customer. meaning sparkling up after your self, pitch in the place you could, and attempt to no longer create extra artwork to your host once you could keep away from it. If I had a house customer like your cousin, they had in no way be invited back! do no longer do his laundry, do no longer sparkling up his messes, and if he leaves his crap mendacity around then positioned it on his mattress so he can manage it. Gawd, what a jerk!

either baking soda or vinager are good things to get the dirty smells out but putting them together I dont know. Isnt that the combination they use in school science projects to make active volcanos. I dont think that mixture together would be good.

I know that vinegar is good to add to the wash the first time you wash jeans as it will help set the dye and they won't fade. Providing, you'd rather your clothes not fade.

If your main concern is saving money, you can also cut your dryer sheets in half and it works as well as a whole one does.
