I work as a teacher in a private school. I was given keys to the school so as to open the door and the classrooms. I live a bit far and I don’t drive a car so I have to commute by public transport. Anyway, it’s a bit tiring since I change from bus to train and then I use the underground. Approximately it is a twenty minute trip but, I have to walk to the school for another fifteen minutes so I discussed with my boss the fact that I was feeling very stressed-being the only one to have keys to the school-and he told me that he would give keys to the other colleague too. I feel much relieved now but could this be a negative thing for my ability to cope under pressure?

no. you just want to be on the safe side. i mean.. public transport aint exactly reliable. and what if you're ill one day and can't go in. its daft for there just to be one of you with keys. u were right to share the responsibility. at least people wont be stuck waiting outside if ur late one day!

No, I don't believe so. I think this shows that you can see the possible consequences of the situation - ie being a keyholder is a position requiring you to be there to let others in, and given that you have to rely on three means of transport to be running, and on time, there is every possibility that on occasion, you might, through no fault of your own, be late and inconvenience others. I think though, that you probably should avoid telling your boss that a situation makes you feel very stressed, just point out why a situation concerns you and what you think a better solution would be. That way, he sees you as a problem solver with attention to detail rather than someone who gets stressed.

No I would say not, But being a private school you would think that the school could / should employ a caretaker to ensure it is opened up perhaps you should make that as a suggestion

Not at all . It all depends on how you look at it. Sharing the responsibility ensures that the school will be open on time for the others and allows for potential problems when you are traveling to school.

Hi Maggie. You sound very rational to me. Preparing for the 'unexpected' by having a backup 'system' is a very good idea. Give yourself credit for taking such a responsible view of your new responsibility.

Best wishes.

I don't think so...you were being honest with your boss and what happens if you can't come in? I think it was a good thing you did...
