Clicking anywhere on this map will give you a more detailed look at that portion of the Roman Empire; as a guideline, the map above is divided into nine relatively equal segments which overlap somewhat in case you click near the border of a portion. The detailed maps will allow you to select segments for even greater detail.
THE RISE OF THE GREEK EMPIRE

...BELOW is EXCERPT for web site
The origins of Greece are shrouded in mystery and date back to the time of Abraham, 18th century BCE, or perhaps even earlier. Historians disagree as to where the Greeks came from - they could have been people migrating down from Asia down through Europe and settling in the Greek Isles, or they could have been seafaring people who settled along the coast.

Well, when you think of an Empire, the obviously first thought is
1. The Roman Empire
that even continued (formally) long after the actual Rome fell.
Another one is, of course,
2. The Chinese Empire
that is in itself a great civilisation
Then there should be mentionned
3. The Austro-Hungarian Empire
4. The Ottoman Empire (Turkey)
5. The Brittish Empire
6. The Russian Empire (later Soviet Union)
Well, these are the most important probably for the civilisation developpment. If you need some older, you can also remember the Egyptian or Alexander Grand (that one only lasted some years). And well, as for more recent, the German Reich (especially, 3d, i.e. Hitlerian, but also 2-d that lost the WW1), and the USA.
Good luck!
