As natural of a behavior as possible.
- Using the entire cage- warm areas and cool areas
- Feeding well, enthusiastically
- Growing at a normal rate
- 'Sun Worship' position when basking- head and limbs stretched out
- No aggression
- Courtship behaviors if right ages and sexes
- Does not seem to be hiding
- Rests often, but not always lethargic

The main thing is to get to know turtles- see them in the wild, zoo, etc. Read up on them and just get to know them.

Mom tree is absoloutly right. If yor turtle is swimming and eating then it is happy. My turtle if so happy when he sees me hi tries to jump out of the water. HAppy turtles lways seem to want to eat! Unhealthy turtles (asuming they are aquatic) will stay on the land and near the heat source (e.g. basking lamp). They will not eat and won't swim.

If they are alive and eating regularly, they are happy. An unhappy or ill turtle will not eat.
