Does anyone know ANY critique on boyscouts? I have heard and read many many good things about being a scout. But I think they are all biased (or narrow-minded, lopsided, one-sided). Can anyone write why it is NOT worth being a scout? What is not good about it? Try to write significant and substantial things as well, if there are any.

If you don't like structure, it ain't worth it.

If you don't like doing differant things IE camping, hiking, community service, swimming etc etc...It ain't worth it.

If you have problems with authority figures and people telling you what to do, it ain't worth it.

If you have "racial" issues, it ain't worth it.

If you have no patriotic feelings whatsoever it ain't worth it.

If you have no goals and don't want any, it ain't worth it.

If you don't like meeting people who may or may not support your beliefs, it ain't worth it.

If you must party every weekend, it ain't worth it.

That's just a partial list...I could go on.

But, one thing I am sure you NEVER saw in the "good" things. Any comment about how you can have a sense of family within the Boy Scouts. Especially if you're in a single parent home, and even if both your parents are living at home.

I am unhappy with many aspects of the Scouts (and I was both a Scout and a Scout leader, and even a staff member), but... bad things about being a Scout?

About the only downside is that most of your peers and some adults think Scouting is dorky. There are adults who like to sit outside the program and judge it from a few news reports- it is supposed to be pro-Christian, anti-gay, anti-girl, etc., but dang- I never saw any of that.

According to some commentators, the Scouts are big on blind loyalty- 'obey' is a big part of the Oath and Law. Supposedly, the Scouts is trying to turn out an army of blindly obedient pre-soldiers that will gladly join the military and die for the flag. Considering how few join, it is obvious that this theory is rather flawed.

Other commentators talk about the gay stance, and the large amount of quasi-gay activity that goes on in the program. Having been there, I think this a load of bunk and the humor is just plain juvenile, not bashing or quasi-gay.

The Scouting program can too easily become a haven for pedophiles or child molesters, but that is equally true of any other youth group, teachers, church, etc. Most molestation still happens by family members or close family friends rather than youth leaders.

if you have heard and read many good things about being a scout that should tell you something. If you look hard enough ,someone is going to dampen your outlook on scouting. Be a scout and be a good one. It will help you all of your life.
