well i think it was the colour...i think this because the fruit stays orange all the way through where as all the other fruits change colours. this is why they didn't call a apple green or a banana yellow because all these change where as the orange doesn't

The color orange, if you think about it light had to have been there first and since colors are just the visible part on the light spectrum, the color came before oranges.
