That all depends on your dog, the length of his nails, his weight, and whether he is a digger or not. Could they wreck leather, sure, so could someone with a sharp object sticking out of their pocket.

Yes as large dog toenails will either scratch or in some cases puncture the leather. You can't win as small dogs have sharper nails and they will scratch also. If your dog will stay in the rear seat I'd buy a seat cover in a car magazine to protect the leather.
My daughter has a 100 lb. yellow lab. and her Tahoe has leather seats. They learned to fold down the rear seats after the first trip with him.

Taking your dog for a ride in a car with leather seats could definitely be hazardous for the seats. First, your dog will automatically try to stabilize himself by grabbing with his toenails. If your dog starts to slide while you are turning, your dog is going to use his toenails to try to stay upright. You will likely end up with scratch marks or punctures unless you take action such as using padding. However, the use of padding can make the seat surface slippery for your dog and you will risk possible injury to your dog if you are not careful. Other considerations to are whether you dog might become carsick and spew, or go to the bathroom on the seats and discolor them. Probably the best way to transport your dog in a car with leather seats would be to use a cage.

We have leather seats....it's better cos they wipe clean and have never been scratched. You can also buy a cover that goes from the top of the rear seat, across the sitting area then up to hook onto the head rests of the front seats....that;ll protect the seats and it stops the dogs getting into the front.
I have one of these too for longer trips.

They could, they can get excited and scuff the leather. Try to put the dog in a cage if you can, seats are expensive.

Yes, their nails will shred it. I never allow dogs in my car. I hate their shedding, and nails.
