put new battery on it , made sure starter turns, it turns motor over when I put hot wire directly to starter. Can't get it to turn over with using the key. what is more likely the starter switch or the starter solenoiod? I get light on tester coming on when I touch every wire on the solenoid. I am thinking that is it. thanks for the help

I'm with KDL. The same thing happened on my John Deere. Bottom line the solenoid was bad.

May I correct the lady who chose to stick her nonsense big nose into this important question. All small John Deers now have crappy Briggs and Stratton motors. The largest B.S. factory is in China. The second largest is Mexico. Why did JD. wander away from the venerable work horse Kohler power plants? The B.S. Motors are cheap pieses of crap. Ask any small engine repair person. It's certainly too bad a great company settles corn - popper engines.

the solenoid is bad if you have to jump it to turn the starter.
check and make sure you have a good ground where your starter bolts on make sure the metal of both surfaces is clean and also make sure your wire ends and solenoid terminals are good and clean and then try it..if the same problem still exists chances are your solenoid is bad.
