I tried to pull a knotted thread through and it got stuck.

Is it string or wire? you could soak it in water for a while and soften up the string if it's a fiber. Once pliable, mash it around with a needle and see if you can get some of it out and then the rest will follow.

Is the bead made of glass? If it is, you can hold a flame to it, and it will burn the string away. Remember to hold the bead with tweezers

how on earth did a string get stuck on a bead???
just pull it out...
