Franco died in office in 1975,after arranging for the restoration of the royal family under terms of a contstitutional monarchy. He was one of three minor ( arguably four) WWII-era dictators or chiefs-of-state to die that year. Haile Sellassie of Ethiopia also died that year,as well as Chiang Kai Chek of the Chinese government in Taiwan. Emon de Valera of Ireland also; although he was only a semi-dictator and retired as head of government in 1948,he remained in essental power until 1970 as leader of Ireland's dominant party. Salazar of Portugal,a clerico-fascist dictator in power since 1928,also died in 1970. Thousands of Nazis fled to Spain and Portugal in the closing days of the war,and many prospered. Otto Skorzeny lived openly in Madrid until his death in 1975. There is some evidence that the primary organs of SS financial power or organization were transferred to Spain 1944-46,and that to some extent the SS continued to exist there. If so,it would explain the propensity of men like Skorzeny to plant stories of SS activity in South America. He was also active in Ireland in the 1950's; interesting to reflect how much of the fascist era survived and for how long.
