I have found a spider with a smiley face on it's back! What kind is it?

I need a bit more to go on...where do you live, how big was the spider, what color, size and of body and arrangement of legs in relation to it, did you see a web, etc.
Here are links with photos. I'd suggest argiopes or orb weavers, since they generally have interesting markings.

Clearly this is the outdated variety. These were common around the time of the ones that had the ghostbusters emblem on their backs. Both of these were preceeded by the ones back in the sixties with the peace symbol on their backs. If you find one with a skull and crossbones on his back, he may be poisonous so stay away.
