The publication date is very often on the left-hand side of one of the first few pages of a book (if not the first), where you'll see some publisher information as well.

If there are a number of years, you'll want to choose the most recent year, as that will have been when the edition you have was printed. If you're looking for when it was originally published though, you can probably go with the earliest date, and it might even say 'first edition published in'/'first published in' alongside it.

Where and when do you need to know? If you have the book, it is on the title page of most in the last 150 years. If you don't have the book, the Union Catalog lists all books in all the collections of a bunch of libraries. The Library of Congress cataloging cards and info have it.
If you are talking about publication dates of older books, good articles on the author, such as those in the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, will list years of publication. There are probably reference books intended for librarians with data. Call your nearest substantial college or public library and ask the reference or fine arts librarian about the book

Date of Publication

The date of publication might be found in a number of places:

on the front or back of the title page
in a preface or letter of transmittal
at the bottom of the last page
embedded in a report number
If no date can be found, but the receipt date of the item was stamped on the document, use that date, in brackets, with a “by”:

[by 1979]

If you can't find any date, use “n.d.” (no date).

If none of the other answers work, you can look up the book on Amazon or another book website such as Alibris.
