Do i need a windows xp cd and if not how do refornatt it?

It has a "create recovery disk" utility somewhere in your Start Menu.
Use that to create the disks ... then just insert the first disk & proceed from there.

Some models also have the recovery files on a hidden partition of the hard drive & can be re-installed (as well as format the drive) by pressing the "F10" at boot up.

*** Beware this will cause you to lose all your files on the hard drive ***

If your hard drive has a recovery partition then you should have a recovery option at start up like f7 or something,If not then there isn't much else you can do...good luck

make a dos boot disk, copy format to it and reboot, at the "a" prompt type in format c:

answer 'y'

but beware you will no longer have an OS on the PC and it will NOT boot until you get one on there
