i had 2 male cats and im not sure which one
but they marked their territory on the mattress while there were blankets on it.
this will be my 2nd time washing the blankets cause they started to smell like cats urine again.
but im thinking it's the mattress that keeps the smell coming back.
how can i clean this?
the only thing i have done is used some carpet cleaner stuff and some disinfectant or a little dish soap and water.
do you think the mattress needs to be thrown out now?
BTW
i don't own the cats anymore and there hasnt been any cats in the house for over a month now, this happened before i gave them away.
any suggestions at all?

Whatever you use, make sure it contains enzymes that DESTROY pet odors. If you simply try to clean the mattress, you will not get all of the urine that has soaked deep into the mattress. I would go to a pet store and ask for an enzyme-based cleaner. I have carpets cleaned in my rental property that were literally soaked with cat urine - down to the padding. They use an enzyme product that breaks down the odors. It is amazing. I used to replace the carpet as you could NEVER get the smell of a cat out. Good Luck.

My friend owns a carpet/furniture cleaning business. She won't even accept a job where the cat has sprayed/urinated on furniture. There is absolutely nothing that will eliminate that odor. I have pulled up carpet, padding and painted the floors under all that to rid the cat urine odor. Get rid of it.
Regarding the cats, if a male cat is neutered early, at about four months, he will not spray. It is a cat that is not neutered or was not neutered soon enough that will actually spray. Don't blame the cats. If you spay or neuter the cat you will not a problem. If the kitty litter box is scooped twice daily and totally dumped, washed and clean litter once a week , a cat will not do this. You only fill the box about a quarter of the way. Do not fill it too much. They do not like that either.

One of my girls did this while she was ill. Taking the mattress outside on a couple of sunny days will help. I also used a product from PetSmart for animal stains and odors on the mattress. To finish, I now have the mattress in a cover (not plastic) that repels moisture and further eliminates the odor.
If you do place the mattress outside, place it where no roaming cats can get to it or where you can watch it. I had a patio where no animals could spray over the mess I was trying to eliminate.
I still have my cats, but I do not have the smell.

The taking outside in sunshine and fresh air is good, but when my cat did this to a brand new $500.00+ set years ago I used lots of baking soda. It really does absorb the smell, just keep pouring it on, rubbing it in and vaccuming it up until it is gone. The pet store stuff may work too never tried it.
Bakinf soda is very cheap and in my opinion the best place to start.

at the pet store they have some stuff but it doesnt really take care of it. You can try spraying vinegar(the smell of it will dissapate) however nothing gets rid of the smell completely it just dilutes it and if you ever get a cat again it will spray the mattress all over again..Its best to get rid of it. p.s. putting a plastic cover over it will make it mold.

You can call Stanley steamer and they will clean your mattress. They can deodorize it too. We have our mattresses cleaned once a year. It helps with allergies.

vanilla will get rid of the odour, I have even diluted it with a bit of water when spraying a large area.
