I never heard of this, until my father in law said something about releasing it every so often. I'm afraid to touch it!! But is there something I should do to keep it in good condition for a time when I might really need to use it?

The cables and linkage need to be used to keep them from rusting and not operating properly . The automotive recomendation is to use the emergincy brake every time the car is parked . in real life (I'm guilty) we don't .

Actually you should be applying your emergency/park brake every time you park and leave the car. When you engage the park brake you insure that the main brakes (rear) stay adjusted.

Every time the emergency brake is set it works the self adjusting mechanism for the brakes keeping the brake linings adjusted.

When you pull up on the handle it shouldn't travel to far up like toward the end of it's travel. It should move about 6 to 10 clicks when fully engaged. By not using it you actually can cause it to not be effective when you need it.

Lisa, I hope you are pretty and have large....
he is putting one over on you.

IT is not, I repeat NOT, an emergency brake.

It is a parking brake that is either actuated by foot(American usually) or by hand (Euro/Asian). For you I suspect it never gets used even though you indicated in your question that it is always on.

Use it all the time(manual transmission) or never (Auto transmission). It depends on your vehicle and your circumstances. People in San Francisco, CA(USA) by law are to use theirs not matter what type of transmision.

You are OK but don't think of it as an EMERGENCY brake it is NOT

if your car has drum brakes you need to periodically set the parking brake to enable the system to adjust as the pads wear. if the vehicle has disc brakes all around you needn't do this as disc brakes automatically adjust with each application.

but if you do have drum brakes in the rear then applying this brake everytime you park the car, or at least once daily, to keep this brake properly adjusted. hence the reason it's also called the parking brake

not really, I would just suggest to maybe pull and set it once a month to keep the spring in good shape. Its going to go bad if its going to go bad ya know, theres really nothing you can do.
