The new Kirby is designed to go on hard surface floors. It will not scratch or damage your flooring like the others will.

I have a Dyson, and it is great for all of my floors. I have tile and carpet, and I just flip the lever on it, and it quickly goes from one to the other. Has great power/suction. Is a little awkward for using the wand, but not too bad once you get used to it. I have a dog, and never have any problems getting the hair to pick right up.
Love the Dyson. A little expensive, but we got ours at Target when it was on sale, plus applied for a credit card (which we later canceled) to get an extra 10% off.

I've always had central vac and it has been wonderful for EVERY kind of floor.
