I have used salt alot. But If they are eating your garden stuff like flower shoots or vegetables, then you can buy "diatomacious" powder. You sprinkle this around the areas you do NOT want them and when they crawl through it, they get very very tiny cuts, (the powder is made of crushed up sea shells and things from the ocean) and they either crawl away and die, or they just LEAVE where you have sprinkled this powder. I have never had success with the beer trick. The powder is the best way to get rid of them.

Robert Hollingsworth of the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service in Hilo, Hawaii, and his colleagues were testing caffeine sprays. They found that a 1 to 2 percent caffeine solution killed nearly all the slugs and snails within two days. Concentrations as low as 0.01 percent put the pests off their dinner.
A cup of instant coffee contains about 0.05 percent caffeine so 2% (W/V) is approximately 2-4 grams of instant coffee in a 1/2 cup of water. Or spray with full strength brewed coffee.

Coffee grounds are recommended as a home remedy for keeping slugs and snails at bay but a caffeine solution is much more effective, he says: "Slugs turn back immediately after contacting the [caffeinated soil]." "I would expect caffeine applications to kill small snails and slugs, and repel the larger ones," says Hollingsworth.

Slugs are attracted to the odors given off by the yeast fermentation process. The most popular bait has been beer. However, not all beers are created equal. In 1987, a study at Colorado State University Entomology Professor Whitney found that Kingsbury Malt®, Michelob®, and Budweiser® attracted slugs far better than other brands.

Can’t sacrifice the beer? Try a mixture of 1 tablespoon (T) yeast, 1 T flour, 1 T sugar, and 1 cup water. The beer will need to be replaced at least once a week or more as it looses its potency or becomes diluted by rain.
The range of slug traps is only a few feet so you need to supply a few throughout your garden. Never sink the containers with their rims flush with the soil level or you run the risk of drowning ground beetles, or other important slug predators. The rims should be 1" above the soil's surface.

Salt will eventually destroy your grass. I go around and lift up the rocks and boards and stuff they hide under, pick them up and dump them in soapy water. You can also put out dishes of beer and the slugs will crawl in get drunk and drownd. This is serious, not a joke. You can usually pay kids a small fee to go after your slugs. Kids probably wont work for more than a day or two but any dead slug is fine. They reproduce in the hundreds from one slug.

Slugs were destroying my vegetable and flower gardens several years ago. I tried being all environmental and organic and using salt and beer and vinegar. None of them worked. I finally bought some snail and slug bait at Wal-Mart and later at Lowes. It's a flake like product that you sprinkle wherever you have problems. It includes an attractant as well as poison.Works like a charm for me. We had slugs that were 8 inches long and close to 3/4 inch in diameter. Gross!

"The weapons
For the sake of the environment, it is better to make an effort to control slugs and snails without using chemicals and poisons before you resort to chemical warfare.
Hand to hand combat
Keep slug pokers stuck around the garden at random. Meet your enemy, one on one... Your weapon is at hand, impale them!
Fill a small bowl with stale beer. Put it in the areas where the slugs are active. Stale beer attracts the slugs and they drown. You may also use grape juice or a tea made from yeast, honey and water.
Destroy any and ALL slug eggs you find!
Bait and destroy tactics work. Set a pile of slightly dampened dry dog food in an area frequented by slugs. In the morning and evening visit the feeding station a few times.... slug poker in hand!
Battle lines
Cedar bark or gravel chips spread around your plant will irritate and dehydrate slugs.
The sharp edges of crushed eggshells around the plants will cut and kill slugs. The calcium in the eggshells is a good soil amendment anyway!
Sprinkle a line of lime around your plants. (Obviously this won't work around plants requiring a more acidic soil)
Certain herbs (Rosemary, lemon balm, wormwood, mints, tansy, oak leaves, needles from conifers and seaweed will repel slugs. However using a mulch of these plants will only turn thhe slugs away, in search of other food sources.
Oat bran will kill slugs when they eat it... sprinkle some around.
Enlist allies..... snakes, ducks, geese, toads, and Rhode Island Reds would enjoy helping you out as they dine on your slugs."

Here is the answer about the salt:
"Do not use salt to destroy snails and slugs; it will increase soil salinity"

We had a authentic mission with slugs drawing close our porch at nighttime and that i became consistently stepping on them...once with bare feet....eww. jointly we had cats messing in our flower pots, so I made little fabric bags and crammed them with moth balls and placed them out on the patio. I genuinely have in no way seen a slug accessible on the grounds that. the following is a few thing i found on the internet. Landscaping - Earth rings/FossilWear™ - keep on-line ornamental Arts & backyard upload-ons information - Order style - Order information - about DVD - contact suggestion- links - domicile Horticulture answer Base Index & search for SLUGS--administration There are various administration/administration concepts for slugs. first and proper-rated is to eliminate their habitat. keep away from debris left in the backyard that provides a hiding position. inspire air stream. using a lot less mulch would no longer look sensible yet will shrink the slug inhabitants. some flowers would properly be mulched that do not choose mulching; a mature hosta plant will colour the floor and reduce any weed competition. some flowers would seem a lot less perfect to slugs. at the same time as many hostas look to attraction to slugs like a magnet, lots of the blue kinds and/or those with "waffled" leaves look unaffected. Succulents, ivy, and ripening produce are also beautiful food factors. certain mulch fabric has a tendency to be a lot less beautiful to slugs. Cedar chips, pine needles and rinsed, beaten egg shells have a tendency to repel slugs, both using smell, resin and/or sharp edges. really, many hosta growers are reporting stunning successes with pine needles utilized 2 to three inches thick. Needles gained't seriously disturb the soil pH. Hand figuring out on slugs and crushing them (or putting them in a jar or bag for disposal once you're squeamish) is yet another option, exceptionally in the course of the nighttime and early morning hours. Slugs would properly be trapped lower than forums or overturned flower pots and bumped off. keep the traps in the backyard various days earlier eliminating to allow slug populations to come across a sparkling "hiding position."

I use Sluggo that I purchase at my local nursery. It dessicates the snails/slugs and is safe to use around pets and chidren. Quite effective, even if you have to reapply.

I knew a lady that poured beer into a plate, left in on her front porch and they all came to drink the beer! She'd pour some poison flakes on them after they had time to get drunk. Weird huh? I never did it, but I watched her do it for years. Bizarre.
