I've often wondered the same thing. We just all take the dictionaries word for it that things are spelled right! I say we revolt and just spell however we want to! Three cheers for hooked on phonics!

Probably the same way we know about "dord", which supposedly meant density. It was a typo of "D or d", the abbreviation for density, and it was even given a pronunciation when it was mistakenly printed in Webster's.
